This is the question to which Dr. Jonas Salk dedicated much of his last years, writing in collaboration with Carol Anne Bundy, with whom he co-founded the Human Futures Foundation as a 501(c)(3) US registered public charity, now also registered in the United Kingdom and as associations in Switzerland and France.
At that time, the early and mid-ninties, to Dr. Salk, humanity had reached a stage of evolution in which wisdom would need to become the new basis for fitness.
During those same years, Dr. Salk was also developing an innovative immunotherapeutic vaccine for the treatment of HIV referring to AIDS as "the metaphoric disease of our time" meaning that we, as a species, had succeeded to such an extent that we were now suffering from our success.
In his view, wisdom, both in terms of finding treatments for HIV and in it's prevention, would allow for a more hopeful future.
