Of Rich and of Poor

In his iconic 1959 lecture entitled The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution, British mathematician and novelist C. P. Snow held that division in dialogue between the humanities and the sciences was brought about, not only by prejuidice, but also by the inability to share common understanding in terms of concepts and words.

Snow had wanted to entitle his lecture Of Rich and of Poor, a shift in meaning that would perhaps be even more apt today when considering far-reaching and emblematic societal divisions.

The Human Futures Foundation opened an exploration of the Two Cultures premise in the 21st century through an internet conference held in 2006, convened in association with the Western Behavioral Sciences Institute in La Jolla, California.  This multi-disciplinary conference has proved seminal in the development of the charity's HIV research advocacy.
